Tarmac Driveway Repair Harrow HA1

We lay new tarmac driveways in Harrow, resurface tired drives and carry out tarmac driveway repair work, with the sub-base, falls and edging done properly so the surface lasts.

Quality Tarmac Driveway Installers Harrow

Harrow has some of London's best preserved Metroland streets, with semis and detached houses fanning out from Harrow on the Hill towards West Harrow, Headstone and Kenton. Our team lays tarmac driveways in Harrow across HA1, HA2 and HA3, and we understand that a frontage needs to suit the house as well as the car. From new asphalt drives with brick borders to resurfacing and tarmac driveway repair on Wealdstone terraces, we handle every stage of the job.

Local Asphalt Drive Installer Harrow

Harrow's heavy London clay moves in dry spells, so we excavate properly, compact a Type 1 sub-base and lay hot asphalt in two courses. Coloured tarmac with block-paved or clay brick edging suits mock Tudor and Arts and Crafts frontages, and channel drains or porous asphalt keep water off the footway. We are FMB and TrustMark members, fully insured, and every job is guaranteed.

How Much Does a Tarmac Driveway Cost in Harrow HA1?

Harrow driveway prices depend on the size and slope of the frontage, how much existing paving or concrete must be removed, and the sub-base depth London clay requires. Sloping plots need more drainage, and conservation areas often call for brick borders or coloured tarmac. Retaining walls, steps and works around mature trees can also add to the job. Every quote is fixed and written after a free survey. Call us on 020 8226 5062 to arrange yours.

Signs Your Harrow Tarmac Driveway Needs Attention

Small defects in tarmac grow quickly once water gets in. These are the signs it is time to call us.

Cracks and crazing

Hairline cracks let water into the base, where frost widens them every winter.

Potholes

Loose, missing patches that will keep growing and can damage tyres and trip visitors.

Sinking or dips

Low areas and ruts point to a weak or washed-out sub-base under the surface.

Standing water

Puddles that sit for hours mean the falls or drainage need correcting.

Weeds at the edges

Growth along edges and cracks shows the surface is opening up and losing its seal.

Faded, grey surface

Oxidised, crumbly tarmac that sheds grit is near the end of its life and may need resurfacing.

Tarmac Driveways in Harrow: Local Ground, Drainage and Planning

Metroland Semis and Clay Slopes Around Harrow on the Hill

Harrow on the Hill is a conservation area, and the borough has many others, so frontage changes near Harrow School, Roxeth Hill and parts of Harrow Weald need extra care with Harrow Council. Sloping streets around the Hill make falls and drainage critical, as water running off a drive cannot be directed onto the pavement. London clay is shrinkable and slow draining, which favours porous asphalt or drainage to a lawn on front gardens over 5 m². Metroland semis often have mature trees and hedges close to the frontage, so roots and edge restraint need planning. Dropped kerbs are approved by Harrow Council, which considers visibility, street trees and nearby parking bays.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Tarmac Driveways & Surfacing Questions

Straight answers to the questions Harrow customers ask us most. If yours is not here, call us.

Do tarmac driveways need planning permission?

Standard tarmac is impermeable, so a new front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your property, or you use porous asphalt. We design drainage to keep you within the rules.

My Harrow driveway slopes towards the road, so how do you stop water running onto the pavement?

On sloping Harrow plots we combine three measures. We set falls so water heads to the sides of the drive into planted borders, install a channel drain across the bottom of the slope connected to a soakaway, and where suitable use porous asphalt so rain soaks through. Discharging surface water onto the public highway is not allowed, so getting this right also keeps you within permitted development.

Can you lay new tarmac over my old driveway?

If the existing surface is sound and well supported, an overlay is a cost-effective option. If it is sinking, cracked through or badly drained, we recommend a full dig-out and a new sub-base.

How long does a tarmac driveway last?

A well-built tarmac drive on a proper sub-base should last many years. Keeping edges sealed and repairing cracks early makes a big difference.

When can I drive on my new tarmac?

You can usually walk on it the same day and drive on it after a day or so. Avoid sharp turns on the spot and parking in the same position for the first few weeks.

Should I choose tarmac or block paving?

Tarmac is usually quicker to lay and better value per square metre, with a smooth, seamless finish. Block paving costs more but offers more patterns and colours. Many customers combine the two with a tarmac drive and block-paved borders.

Do you repair potholes and cracks in tarmac?

Yes. We cut out failed areas, prepare the base and reinstate with fresh tarmac, sealing the joints so water cannot get back in.
